Frequently Asked Questions

What is the UVD Robot?

The UVD Robot Pharma is a robot, or a self-driving robot, that uses Ultraviolet C (UV-C) light to inactivate microorganisms on surfaces that light hits. The UVD Robot Pharma operates by sensing its environment and moving independently of human interaction, emitting UV-C light that is able to disinfect surfaces.

What are the typical use cases/applications?

We typically see two primary cleanroom applications:

1. Add-on disinfection layer: Used as a supplemental disinfection method to reduce CFU counts and contamination risk (e.g. in Class D/C corridors)

2. Hybrid replacement of chemical disinfection: UV disinfection replaces a majority of manual chemical procedures, reducing use of WFI, labor, and room turnaround time.

How long does it take for the UVD Robot Pharma to disinfect a room?

It depends on the layout, size and microorganism that is targeted but a rule of thumb is that the UVD Robot Pharma can disinfect a 25m2 (269 sq ft) room in approximately 10 minutes or less in its autonomous disinfection mode.

How can UV-C light disinfect a room?

UV-C light, at the germicidal wavelength, is absorbed into the microorganism and alters the genetic makeup (DNA/RNA) inhibiting their replication. The organism will no longer replicate and lead to eventual cell death.

What log reductions are targeted?

Log 3 reduction for vegetative microorganisms (aligned with regulatory expectations) Log 2 reduction for spores using UV-C alone. By increasing exposure time or slowing the robot’s path, higher reductions (Log 4 or Log 5) can be achieved; however, this extends the disinfection cycle time.

Is the robot’s software GMP compliant?

Yes. The system is compliant with CFR 21 Part 11, featuring secure login, audit trails, and validated data logging.

Does the UVD Robot Pharma disinfect everything in the room?

The UVD Robot Pharma will disinfect any hard, non-porous area that the UV-C light hits. This includes floors, walls, and other objects.

Are UVD Robot Pharma Certified?

Yes. UVD Robots are certified by TüV Rheinland, a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NTRL) under the United States’ Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Furthermore, Blue Ocean Robotics, the company behind UVD Robots, holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022, ISO 14001:2015, ISO 9001:2015, EN ISO 13485:2016 and EPA registration.

What is the business rationale behind the implementation?

Lower cost of consumables and labor. Increased flexibility (night/weekend operation). Improved operator wellbeing (reducing repetitive and physically demanding tasks). Return on investment (ROI) is estimated at under 12 months.
